The Alchemy Team

Wave 3 title codes, Fog of War, System Builder, Devlog 22, final charges, & more!
about 1 year ago – Sat, Nov 11, 2023 at 01:22:28 PM

Hey Backers,

What a wild month it’s been over at Alchemy HQ! The development team has crushed several major milestones on the way to our V1 release, such as Fog of War, Dice Pool Actions, support for our first Year Zero Engine game, and the first steps in our long anticipated Streamer Mode.

We’ve got a boat load of news for you in today’s update, including a brand new wave of early title codes, some exciting pivots we’re making to our development strategy, and a closer look at our V1 feature progress.

Let’s dive in!

Backer Box Production Sample

This week we received our final production sample of the Backer Box and Content Decks. I’m excited to report that everything looks spectacular and we’ve officially given the green light to the print manufacturers to begin mass production. We’ve been told that our order will be complete on (or around) November 20th, at which point inventory will be shipped down the road to our fulfillment center and prepared to ship to your door!

Since we launched Early Access, we’ve been tinkering with physical products to represent what we’re doing on the platform. This is a culmination of a lot of experimentation and we couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out. We’re stoked for you to hold this manifestation of the Alchemy V1 launch event in your hands soon!

Shipping & Add-On Charges

With Backer Boxes nearing completion, we’re ready to begin the final collection of funds for shipping and handling, late pledges, and add-ons. Please note that if you have opted out of receiving physical rewards, you will not be charged for shipping!

If you’ve purchased an add-on or are expecting a physical reward, look for your 48-hour notice from BackerKit at the top of the week via email. As always, if you have any questions or last minute changes you need to make, please feel free to get in touch with us directly on Discord or email us at [email protected].

Wave 3 Title Codes

The next wave of codes is here! You should have already received an email notification from BackerKit letting you know that you have new codes waiting for you in your Digital Downloads section. Here’s what you can expect to see there based on your pledge level:

Fantasy Deck + Backer Box Backers

  • Humblewood Tales (Enhanced Edition)*

Futures Deck + Backer Box Backers

  • Vast Grimm (Enhanced Edition)

Horror Deck + Backer Box Backers

  • Vaesen (Enhanced Edition)*
  • Loot Tavern Horror Collection

Add-Ons

  • Vaesen: A Wicked Secret
  • Vaesen: Mythic Britain & Ireland
  • Vaesen: Seasons of Mystery

* These titles are functional, but either have a few features we’re still working on, bugs we’re fixing, or Enhanced assets we’re still creating.

Vaesen Beta

After building support for dice pool actions over the last couple of weeks, we’re excited to begin releasing our first of the Year Zero Engine game systems, starting with Vaesen: Nordic Horror Roleplaying. If you’re receiving the Horror Deck or a Backer Box, you’ll be receiving early access to the Enhanced Edition of the Core Rulebook, which enables complete access to the Vaesen game system integration.

Please note that over the next 1-3 weeks, there may be some dusty corners in the experience that we’re still working to clean up and a few features we’re still building. We wanted to get this into your hands as early as possible so that while we’re finishing the integration we can also be catching any bugs or requests that come up in your early games.

Here’s a look at what we’re looking to complete in the coming days:

  • Initiative / Turn Order
  • Headquarters Sheet
  • Quick Character Generator
  • Items

If you added the Vaesen Complete Collection add-on to your pledge, you’ll also be receiving codes for the three expansions: A Wicked Secret, Mythic Britain & Ireland, and Seasons of Mystery

The complete Vaesen Universe on Alchemy

You will have full access to the book’s contents via the Vaesen Universe, which enables you to explore this Nordic Horror in a rich article view, or search for game rules directly within the gameplay experience.

Universe Article Reading Experience

Vast Grimm

We’re also incredibly excited to release full system support for Vast Grimm: Enhanced Edition! This has been one of our favorite Enhanced titles to create so far, with its edgy theme, out of this world motion overlays and ambiences, and space horror dynamic soundtrack.

Vast Grimm Enhanced Gameplay Experience

If you’ve ever played a Mörk Borg compatible game, you know that rolling new characters is something your players will do often, so we’ve built a random character generator directly into Vast Grimm to make that process quick and easy.

Vast Grimm Random Character Generator

We hope you enjoy these new games! Please let us know what you think by joining our Discord server and sharing your thoughts.

Development Pivot

Since the conclusion of the Kickstarter, our team has been pedal to the metal on building out our V1 feature set in parallel with game system support for the titles offered on the campaign. We’ve made some incredible progress, ingesting all 83 titles into Alchemy Universe modules, building ground-up support for 6 new game systems, and creating Enhanced asset suites for 23 titles. – We’re especially excited about our recent work on Vaesen which lays the groundwork for the rest of the Year Zero Engine catalog to be a fast-follow

Progress aside, we still have quite a few systems still to mechanize and are feeling the pressure of delivering these games in sync with our V1 release before the end of the year. That’s why we’ve made an exciting pivot in our development strategy that we think will 1) greatly increase our velocity of delivering systems, both now and in the future, and 2) add a powerful new feature set for home brewers and tinkerers. We’re unceremoniously calling it: System Builder. 😅

System Builder will enable us to utilize members across our entire team (not just oure developers) to mechanize game systems by creating an interface that allows us to build custom dice mechanics, drag-n-drop character sheets, themes, and gameplay panels; but what’s better, is that all of that functionality will extend to you as well!

This is a significant effort that won’t happen overnight. To maintain our current velocity on game systems, we plan to continue building out the Year Zero Engine games and have hired a new engineer to help shoulder the load of System Builder. With our recent breakthrough with Vaesen (YZE), it’s our hope that Coriolis, Tales From the Loop, and the rest of the Free League catalog follows quickly behind, reserving the meatier systems, like Pathfinder, for System Builder to do more of the heavy lifting.

We’re excited about this new direction, but more than just sharing that with you, we wanted to let you know that we’re relentlessly dedicated to maintaining consistent releases at the Alchemy standard of quality. – As always, if you have any questions or comments about this pivot, please feel free to share your thoughts on our Discord. We read every post!

Version One Progress

In our last update, we shared a list of all of our in-flight Version One tasks. Here’s a quick update on that list:

  • Sound Actions (Live) ✅
  • NPC Sharing (Live) ✅
  • Action in Universe (Live) ✅
  • Fog of War (Live) ✅
  • Streamer Mode (In Development) ⚒️

We’re so excited to announce that Fog of War is now available on Alchemy! – This has been one of our most requested features since the Early Access launch and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

Fog of War w/ Tool Mapping

Tool Mapping

We’re always looking for ways to streamline the Alchemy experience, keep functions simple, and avoid cluttering the interface with tons of buttons. Tactical play introduces the need for a handful of important tools like measurement, painting fog, erasing fog, pinging the map, covering the entire map, and revealing the entire map.

To address this suite of tools without making Tactical Mode feel like Photoshop, we created a combo button in the right rail that enables you to map tools to your left and right mouse clicks. For example, if you’re fogging a map, you might want your fog brush mapped to your left click and your fog eraser to your right. If you’re running a dungeon crawl, you might want your fog eraser mapped to your left click and your measurement tool to your right. – Middle click (mouse wheel) is always mapped to map panning for quick access.

We’re stoked on Fog of War, but we want to hear your thoughts! Please take a look and let us know what you think.

The Alchemy Devlog: Episode 22

Have you subscribed to the Alchemy Devlog yet? In Episode 22, Isaac dives deep on Fog of War, player-playable NPCs, cross system Universes, and more! Take a closer look at these features and stick around for the Q&A at the end of the video.

Don’t forget, you can submit your own questions to be answered on the Devlog here

The Alchemy Team

Wave 2 title codes, V1 progress, wave 3 preview, Devlog 20, & more!
about 1 year ago – Tue, Oct 03, 2023 at 11:17:50 PM

Hey Backers,

The Alchemy team is continuing to make excellent progress on game development and our Version One feature roadmap! As of today we’ve delivered early codes for 60% of the titles offered on the campaign, including our first 5 Alchemy Enhanced titles. We’re especially excited to have created and delivered our first non-5e supported game systems! Let’s dive into the updates.

But first…

PSA: 6 Month Subscription Backers

If you backed at the Content Deck or Content Deck Bundle tier, you should have received your Alchemy Unlimited subscription codes last month. If you’ve already redeemed your code to start your subscription, you may have received an automated email from Stripe (our payment platform) that your subscription will soon renew and that your payment method will be charged. This is an error that you can safely ignore!

You can safely ignore this message!

For more context, we set up 6-month subscription codes on our end as 6 FREE month-to-month subscriptions and these emails are being generated to notify you of the first month expiring. We’ve since disabled these email notifications to avoid any further confusion, but if you were one of the lucky ones that received one, fear not! You will not be billed until the end of your 6 free months, and only if you’ve added a payment method to your account.

Okay cool, but I haven’t received a subscription code at all?

Everyone who backed the campaign at $25 or higher should have received a free subscription code. If you don’t see your code in BackerKit (under Digital Downloads) please be sure to reach out to [email protected] and let us know so we can get you set up!

Do I have to redeem my subscription code now?

As a reminder, if you prefer to wait to start your subscription until your favorite game is available on Alchemy, you absolutely can! Codes never expire, so hang on to it as long as you’d like.

Wave 2 Title Codes

The next wave of codes is here! Yesterday you should have received an email notification that you have new codes waiting for you in BackerKit in your Digital Downloads section. Here’s what you can expect to see there based on your pledge:

Fantasy Deck + Backer Box Backers

  • Scarlet Citadel (Enhanced Edition)

Futures Deck + Backer Box Backers

  • CZEPEKU Sci-Fi: Futures Collection (FKA Hyperdrive Fleet)

Modern Deck + Backer Box Backers

  • Kids on Bikes (Enhanced Edition)
  • Cartel

Horror Deck + Backer Box Backers

  • Steinhardt’s Guide to the Eldritch Hunt

Dystopia Deck (Backer Box Backers Only)

  • Mörk Borg Enhanced Edition
  • Pirate Borg Enhanced Edition
  • Beneos Battlemaps: Widowhall

This drop marks an exciting milestone for us as it includes our first set of bespoke game systems: Mörk Borg, Kids on Bikes, and Pirate Borg. Game integrations include custom character sheets, actions, core dame data, and more.

Let’s take a closer look…

In this death metal album of an RPG, rolling up new characters quickly and easily is essential. When your first Gutter Born Scum inevitably dies, easily generate a random character or build your character line-by-line with inline randomization. Original music, sound, and motion overlays set the perfect atmosphere for your Mörk Borg adventures (and miseries).

Kids on Bikes is a game about creating a kid, teen, or adult from the provided archetypes, then socially building out how your character is related with the others at your table. Give your kid a name, age, choose your build, and you’re good to go. Pull up your character sheet, answer your character questions, and determine your relationships as a beautiful original score sets the tone. (motion and sound coming soon).

Like Mörk Borg, Pirate Borg is a scurvy-ridden game of adventure based on creating (often) randomized pirates and diving right into gameplay. Once you have your Rapscallion, set sail on the high seas with your crew using the integrated ship sheet to keep track of your cargo. (motion and sound coming soon.)

REMINDER:

We’re delivering (tons) of individual codes now for players who are eager to jump in and get started today. You don’t have to redeem all of these codes individually! When all titles are complete, we’ll be distributing deck-based codes that allow you to redeem codes in bulk.

Awesome! So what’s next?

We’re hard at work building more bespoke game integrations and are diving into more complex mechanics like custom dice faces, dice pools, and more complex character sheets. Next up, we’re going down the Year Zero Engine rabbit hole and are aiming to deliver Vaesen, Tales From the Loop, and Coriolis next.

Backer Boxes and Physical Card Decks

After receiving the tooling sample for the Backer Box and card decks, we’ve locked in our tweaks and the factory is officially underway on physical production. We received an update today that said we should expect our order to be complete toward the end of the month.

That means that in about two weeks, we will begin locking orders and charging for shipping and taxes for those who are receiving physical rewards. Please make sure your surveys are filled out and your addresses are up to date. We’ll give you plenty of heads up when that time comes, but know that it’s imminent!

Version One Progress

We’re getting close to stamping our V1 release and making terrific progress on feature development. Here’s a quick peek at what we’ve been working on:

Alchemy Enhanced Dynamic Audio Mixer

Dynamic Audio (Live)

By now you’ve seen our triangular audio mixer in various Alchemy Enhanced demos (or social media). Gamemasters can effortlessly change the mood of the in-game music with an omnidirectional audio mixer across three dynamic ranges. In each Enhanced score, we’re aiming to hit thematic tones specific to the title that capture low intensity, medium intensity, and high intensity moments. This allows a GM to change the sonic feel of the gameplay experience based on what’s happening in the story.

Tactical Mode Measuring Tool

Measuring Tool (Live)

While in Tactical Mode, holding right-click and dragging your mouse will now reveal a tool that enables you to measure distances in feet (5e), grid squares, and hexes. The measuring tool automatically snaps to the grid (when enabled) or you can hold ALT/OPTION to measure without snapping. Additionally, while measuring, you can left-click to create a plot point, allowing you to measure orthogonally.

Sound Actions (Testing)

Coming in this Friday’s deploy, create on-demand sound Actions that play for everyone in the game and easily tie them to other Actions, like a dice roll, attack, or random roll table. This works great for pre-recorded voice overs or adding a little sonic flare to your game actions.

NPC Sharing (Finishing Up)

The long requested feature is almost here! Gamemasters will soon be able to change the permissions on specific NPCs, allowing players to impersonate them, edit their character sheets, and use them as if they were their character. This comes in handy for summons, familiars, Wild Shape, and shared vehicles.

Actions in Universe (Finishing Up)

Actions have become a major part of the gameplay experience, allowing players and Gamemasters to create automations for dice rolls, attacks, roll tables, etc. We’re now extending that functionality to Universe, which enables you to create actions ahead of time, and pull them into any game you create or assign default actions for newly created PCs and NPCs. This also enables our team to create premade Actions in published content, giving you the ability to easily add them to your games.

Streamer Mode (In Development)

We’re so excited to have officially broken ground on Alchemy’s streaming capabilities. In the first version, Streamer Mode allows a GM to pop out a new gameplay window, customize (or hide) the panels that are shown in the UI, drop a custom graphical overlay on top of the scene image, and dynamically display camera frames. This window is perfect for capturing with your favorite broadcast tool and sending to sites like Twitch or YouTube. It also works great for your in-person games when casting to a shared display.

Along with the stream window, we’re also extending these same customization features to your public games on Alchemy. We can’t wait to see more people “streaming” their games directly on the platform!

Fog of War (In Development)

Finally! We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve started building a way for GMs to obscure their maps and easily reveal specific portions they choose. We’re stoked on the simplistic design we’ve landed on and the ability to customize what your “fog” looks like. Upload a static or animated texture (clouds, mist, smoke) or choose transparency to elegantly display the obscured environment below the map. We can’t wait to get this in your hands!

The Alchemy Devlog: Episode 20

Have you subscribed to the Alchemy Devlog yet? In our 20th episode, dive deeper with Isaac as he demos the Alchemy Enhanced dynamic audio mixer, safety tools for public games, looks ahead at remaining roadmap items, and devours a hefty portion of Q&A.

Don’t forget, you can submit your own questions to be answered on the Devlog here.
